Three Homemade Face Scrubs For Clearer Skin

Nellie Ryan

If you suffer from the occasional mild acne breakout, using an exfoliating scrub every now and then may help. Exfoliating helps get rid of dead skin cells so that they don't clog up your pores and contribute to the formation of pimples. If you enjoy making homemade beauty products, you can whip up an blemish-fighting skin scrub right in your home kitchen. Here are three simple recipes to try.

Cinnamon Sugar Scrub

It smells like something you would put on toast, but it's actually great for your skin. Cinnamon has natural antibacterial properties, which makes it a great choice for fighting acne, and the sugar exfoliates gently. To make a tub of cinnamon sugar scrub, you need:

  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • ¼ cup liquid castile soap

Place the coconut oil in a glass container, and microwave it for 10 second to liquefy it. Then, add the other ingredients to the container, and mix well. Use about a teaspoon full of this scrub each time you want to exfoliate your face. Rinse it away as soon as you're done scrubbing, as the cinnamon can cause irritation if left on for too long.

Lemon and Olive Oil Scrub

If your skin is naturally a bit dry, this exfoliating scrub is a good one to try. The olive oil adds moisture back to your skin, while the lemon fights blemishes very gently. This recipe calls for superfine sugar, which is very soft and mild as an exfoliant. You can use regular sugar if your skin is a bit less sensitive. You'll need:

  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • ½ cup superfine sugar
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Blend the ingredients together. Remove any makeup from your skin before using this product, as it does not contain soap and won't remove cosmetics effectively. Use your fingers to gently massage the scrub onto your face in a circular motion, and then rinse your face with clear water.

Eucalyptus Scrub

If you have oily skin, this is the scrub you'll want to make as it does a good job of removing excess oils and leaving you feeling fresh. Sea salt, the exfoliant in this scrub, is a bit harsher than sugar but does a good job of removing oily buildup from deep within your pores. You'll need:

  • ½ cup liquid castile soap
  • ½ cup fine sea salt
  • 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil

Mix the ingredients together, and then smooth the mixture over your face. Don't scrub too hard with this one, as it is a bit harsher. Let the mixture sit on your face for a minute or two before rinsing it away in order to enhance the soothing, calming effect. You can click to find out more about skin care.

As an adult in my 50s, I find that my body isn't as strong as it used to be. But I don't let that stop me from enjoying life! In fact, I make every effort to get the treatments I need from my doctor to improve my health. I know that I'm not a senior yet, but I do all I can to prevent the health problems that affect that age group. Because of this, I put together a health blog for people over age 50. My blog isn't a review of what you can easily find on the Internet. It's a plethora of unique information designed to help you find the services you need fast. What my blog doesn't do is tell you what to do for your health. Instead, it offers guidance and options. Please, enjoy the blog and happy reading.
