3 Ways To Naturally Lower Your Cholesterol Level

Nellie Ryan

A regular visit to the doctor for a checkup can reveal a lot about your health, including your cholesterol level. Cholesterol is something that helps you digest food, but too much of it can lead to heart problems. If you find out your cholesterol level is higher than it should be, your doctor may recommend taking medication for this. If you would rather try lowering it naturally, you could try by following these tips.

Eat More Fiber And Protein

Changing your diet is probably the best thing you can do to naturally lower your bad cholesterol level, and this will include cutting out all foods that are high in trans and saturated fats. Instead of eating foods containing these ingredients, begin eating foods that contain fiber and protein. Here are some foods that can actually cause your cholesterol level to drop that contain either fiber or protein:

  • Sweet potatoes, carrots, and eggplant
  • Black beans, pinto beans, red beans, white beans, and garbanzo beans
  • Oranges, apples, and berries
  • Nuts

Lose Weight

Cholesterol is divided into two categories. The first is high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and this is considered good cholesterol. The other is called low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and this is the bad type that needs to be lowered if you have high cholesterol. Being overweight is one of the leading risks of high LDL levels, and you could potentially decrease your LDL level by 8% if you just lose 10 pounds.

If you are extremely overweight and can slowly drop a lot of it, your LDL level will follow. This means that the more weight you lose, the lower your cholesterol level should be. Exercising regularly and watching what you eat may help you achieve this.

Drink Green Tea

The third thing you can do to lower your cholesterol is drink green tea. Green tea not only tastes good and helps you relax, but it also offers a way to naturally lower cholesterol. It will take drinking around 10 cups of green tea per day to see a significant difference in your LDL level, but you are likely to see results in just a few weeks.

If you have a hard time drinking hot tea, you could always brew the tea and place it in your refrigerator. Drinking it cold will offer the same effects as drinking it hot.

There are numerous ways to avoid taking medication to lower your cholesterol level, and your doctor can help you find options that may work for you.
