3 Ways Young Adults Can Adjust To Dentures

Nellie Ryan

Dentures are typically associated with older adults, but there are many people in their 20s and 30s wearing them. For many who have suffered from severe tooth loss, dentures are an only option. If you are young and your dentist has recommended that you wear dentures, here are some tips to help you handle the experience.

Buy Quality Dentures

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when you purchase dentures is to shop based on price rather than quality. Poorly constructed dentures do not fit well and are very noticeable. Poor quality dentures also can make you appear older than you actually are.

Well-made dentures fit well and complement your face, rather than take from it. The dentures also are less troublesome to wear. You might have to spend more for the dentures, but they are worth it.

Ask About Immediate Dentures

Living with missing teeth can be embarrassing. This is especially true for younger adults. Unfortunately, your dentist might believe it is better to wait to order dentures after teeth are removed. As a result, you could spend weeks or even months with missing teeth.

You can avoid this embarrassment though by wearing immediate dentures. Immediate dentures are very similar to the long-term dentures you will eventually. However, the dentures are less expensive and allows your gums to heal without interference.

Practice Talking

After you get dentures, there is a period of adjustment that includes unfortunate changes to your speech. You might talk with a lisp or slur. Unless you have the vacation time to take off work until your speech normalizes, you could have some awkward conversations with friends and family until you become accustomed to the dentures.

You can speed up the process though. Practice your speech in a mirror throughout the day. By practicing, you can not only improve your speech, but also have a chance to see what your mouth looks like while wearing the dentures. If you feel self-conscious about wearing the dentures, seeing how natural they look while you talk can help give you confidence.

There are many young people who are wearing dentures. They all had to go through a period of adjustment that eventually ended and left them with improved self-esteem and a beautiful smile. Keep this in mind while adjusting and keep your dentist in the loop about how you are doing with the dentures so he or she can determine if changes need to be made.
